I have only known "Granny" Vertie for about ten years. My first impression of her was how warm and welcoming she was to me. When she enters a room, she lights it up with her smile and the twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes. She is so warm and nurturing but, make no mistake, she is no "push over". I believe Vertie would fight with unmatched ferocity for any member of her family. She is among the strongest women I have ever known.
I have heard from my husband, Ricky, about Vertie's childhood. One day, during a visit to her home, she opened up to me and started to describe some of the things she endured as a child. I was struck by how calm she was as she told me of things no child should ever have to endure. There were no tears as she spoke. She spoke like "these are just the facts" but they do not define who she is. Vertie overcame and rose above it. I was inspired by her strength and the confidence with which she lives her life.
Words fail me as I search for some superb adjective to describe her. I’ll just say I love Vertie Fulks and she is one truly Great Lady.
